CHAPTER FIFTEEN:
Arabella paced back and forth in her room. Her silver homecoming dress that she’d found over a month ago—the one that matched her perfect silver glitter-tipped heels—was hanging in her closet. She really needed to close that closet. It was not helping her anxiety levels at all.
What would everyone say when they realized she wasn’t at the dance? And more importantly, what would they say when the saw Kinley Jensen on Garrett’s arm instead of her? Not that it mattered—the gossip that he’d dumped her for Kinley was already brutal enough. But now absolutely the whole school would know she wasn’t there.
And last she knew, she was on the Homecoming queen ballot, but there was no way she was going to attend the stupid ceremony without a date. It was unheard of. The worst part was that everyone probably thought she was still missing Garrett and broken-hearted and sobbing and stuff, which was completely untrue and basically dramatic lies. All of it. And she had no way of proving them wrong and setting the record straight.
And so Arabella paced. She never paced, but it felt good right then. Better than lying on her bed feeling sorry for herself. Thankfully, neither her mom nor dad mentioned Homecoming to her so she could keep a tiny bit of dignity.
After a few more minutes, she grabbed her jacket and purse and popped her head into the den. Her parents were watching TV. “Hey, I’m gonna run to the store. Do you guys need anything?” She felt so caged, she had to get out of the house.
Her mom seemed surprised. “Are you offering to help?”
“Um, maybe. What do you need?”
Her mom waved her hand. “Nothing. I was just surprised that you asked.”
“Oh. Okay.” Arabella shrugged, then headed down the hallway and out the door. She couldn’t get to her car fast enough. Everything about her felt caged and frustrated and just awful.
She loved dances, and she loved awards too. Being Homecoming queen was something she’d always looked forward to. And even during the worst of the gossip, she’d hoped that a guy would hear she was single and ask her to go, but no one did. And if she was completely honest with herself, she wasn’t sure who she’d actually want to ask her. One thing was for certain—she wasn’t in the mood to think about another boyfriend right now.
All she wanted was to dance. What was so hard about that?
As she passed brightly lit restaurants and a few stores that were still open, nothing seemed to call out to her. She pulled down a side street and drove aimlessly until she found herself at her favorite old playground at a large park.
Arabella got out of the car and walked around the empty playground. The equipment had been updated—there was a new slide, definitely better sand, and a new climbing wall. But it was the swings that called to her. Without another thought, she sat down in one and could almost feel her daddy pushing her higher and higher.
